Prof. Dr. Dr. Peter Ehlers

Peter Ehlers was born 1943. He studied law at Marburg and Kiel University and wrote his doctoral (PhD) dissertation about IMO. He worked for many years in the Maritime Transport Department of the Federal Ministry of Transport. From 1989 to 2008 he was the President of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Since 2018 he is ombudsman for the safety of traditional ships.

In 2002 he became Professor at Hamburg University. He was awarded Dr. h.c. at Rostock University and the World Maritime University, Malmö (WMU). As a guest lecturer he is still teaching at the WMU and the International Law Institute, Malta.

He is a member of various maritime and law institutions and has published more than 200 papers and articles on maritime, environmental, legal and administrative measures and a voluminous commentary on the German public maritime transport law.

In 2016 he became an officer of the German Federal Order of Merit, awarded by the German Federal President.
