Schlüter Foundation Fellow 2026, Michael Bautista Yutiga

In 2026 the Schlüter foundation supports three more students at World Maritime University with a grant for their research work and related travel expenses.

We would like to introduce our Schlüter Foundation Fellow Michael Bautista Yutiga:

Michael Bautista Yutiga is a distinguished maritime professional who seamlessly bridges deep-sea operational expertise with academic leadership and pioneering industry research. Over a prolific career, he has accumulated 14 years of sea experience as a Marine Engineer, managing complex technical operations worldwide across a diverse fleet of bulk carriers, container ships, general cargo vessels, and training ships. Complementing his time at sea, Michael has dedicated eight years to Maritime Education and Training Institutions (METI), specifically the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), where he excelled in multifaceted roles as an Engine Instructor, Simulator Trainer, Academic Supervisor, Learning Management System (LMS) Course Developer, and Shipboard Training Officer. Currently, he is driving the industry’s digital evolution through research at the World Maritime University (WMU), focusing on the Triple Helix Validation of MASS (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships) Degree 2 and 3 competences. This groundbreaking work targets crucial competences and “sensory voids” in remote operations to formulate future functional equivalence. His ultimate goal is to establish the foundation for a holistic Remote Operations Centre (ROC) METI curriculum that embeds critical human-element safeguards, ensuring absolute safety and marine environmental protection.
