Monika Breuch-Moritz
Monika Breuch-Moritz born 1953 in Andernach is a German meteorologist with a long-standing career in marine, climate and maritime policy. She began her professional path at the German Weather Service (DWD) in 1977. From 1989 to 2008, she hold various leadership positions at the German Federal Ministry of Transport, where she worked extensively on meteorology, climate policy, sea pilotage, and maritime environmental protection. She represented Germany in various European and International Organizations on these topics.
In 2008, she was appointed President of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg and Rostock, a position she held until her retirement in 2018. In 2016, she was designated as an IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador for a six-year term, promoting maritime professions and ocean stewardship.
From 2017 to July 2021, she was a Vice Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO for the region of North America and Europe.
She has been a member of numerous scientific and technical advisory boards related to ocean science, marine environmental protection, and maritime affairs. She currently serves on the Supervisory Board of the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) as well as on other boards in the marine and maritime community and is active in Rotary International and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA).
