The conference planned for the 29th of September 2015 will shed some light on the first experiences from the monitoring of compliance with levels of sulphur emission in practice. There will be a discussion on the importance of a change of limit values and the indeed different control practices for shipping on the shipping routes concerned.<\/p>\n
Since the 1st of January 2015, tighter quality requirements on fuels used on ships have been in effect in special Emission Control Areas (SECA \u2013 Sulfur Emission Control Areas). The limit value of 0.1% of sulphur content in fuel was established both by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in the MARPOL Convention and by EU Directive 1999\/32\/EC on Low Sulphur in Fuel.<\/p>\n
Since the entry into force of the new limit values on the 1st of January 2015, compliance with them has been monitored. The neighbouring countries of North and Baltic Sea are monitoring shipping fuels closely, both by way of checking the required documentation and sampling on board. The results of these checks are exchanged on European database EMSA in Lisbon.<\/p>\n
