Schlüter Foundation Fellow 2026, Hamzeh Jamali

In 2026 the Schlüter foundation supports three more students at World Maritime University with a grant for their research work and related travel expenses.

We would like to introduce our Schlüter Foundation Fellow Hamzeh Jamali:

I am a master’s researcher in maritime studies at the World Maritime University, specializing in maritime energy management. My research explores how operational energy management measures—including speed optimization, voyage planning, and fuel management—can support the transition toward net-zero shipping. By improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO₂ emissions, my work contributes to compliance with international environmental regulations while advancing more sustainable maritime operations.

Building on this research, I am also investigating how operational measures such as slow steaming can reduce underwater radiated noise (URN), an emerging environmental challenge that affects marine ecosystems. This work aims to demonstrate how optimizing ship operations can deliver multiple environmental benefits by simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions and underwater noise, thereby supporting both climate action and the protection of marine biodiversity.

I am sincerely grateful to the Schluter Foundation for its generous support of my research. This support enables me to advance research that contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible maritime sector. I hope that my work will continue to contribute to the Foundation’s vision by generating knowledge and innovative solutions that support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly at the intersection of sustainable shipping and marine environmental protection.
