Retirement of our Advisory Board Member Ms Monika Breuch-Moritz

During a reception by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, our Advisory Board Member Monika Breuch-Moritz retired from her post as President of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Herr successor is Dr Karin Kammann-Klippstein.

Both the Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Andreas Scheuer, and Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation, Frank Horch, emphasized the special effort and expertise that Monika Breuch-Moritz had invested in the field of environmental protection at national and international level.

We are delighted that, even after concluding this outstanding period of office, Monika Breuch-Moritz will continue to support our foundation on the Advisory Board with her great commitment and Energy.

Executive and Advisory Boards of the Foundation visit WMU in Malmö

Our Advisory Board Member and WMU Governor, Professor Peter Ehlers, visited the WMU in Malmö on 2 October 2018 along with the Chair of the Executive Board of our foundation, Dr Axel Henriksen, to mark the official launch of the updated and refurbished WMU Maritime Risk and System Safety (MaRiSa) simulator laboratory. Refurbishment of the laboratory was made possible by a subsidy from the German federal government amounting to EUR 150,000.00. Also present in Malmö were Reinhard Klingen, Ministerial Director for Waterways and Shipping in the Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure as well as Professor Dirk Max Johns (German Shipowners’ Association – VDR) as well as Tino Hensel and Ms Caroline Baumgärtner (Carnival Maritime). Professor Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, Head of Research at WMU and also a member of our Advisory Board, informed the delegation about the special features of the laboratory, which provides the university with the potential to conduct an integrated educational programme in the fields of security, safety and emergency planning in maritime transport and to better coordinate its research activities.

Monika Breuch-Moritz, member of our board of trustees and president of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, has been elected vice-president of IOC after 8 years of heading the German delegation of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO).
We congratulate Mrs. Breuch-Moritz and wish her all the best for her new post.

Special acknowledgement for our member of the board of trustees Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Ehlers: The former president of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency was awarded with the Cross of Merit, 1st Class, of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his honorary engagement for maritime environmental protection as well as for the further development of maritime law. We warmly congratulate him!

Maritime Shipping and Environment Protection – How to master the global challenge?

Under the title of “Maritime Shipping and Environment Protection – How to master the global challenge?” the kick-off event of Jens-Peter and Betsy Schlüter-Foundation for Shipping and Environment Protection took place on 26.05.2016 in Hamburg.

With the welcome support of numerous co-organisers, the Foundation managed to invite top-class speakers to Hamburg, who provided for an excellent conference in English language, rich of content.

The morning session was dedicated to a stocktaking of sustainable environment protection in shipping from the perspective of international associations and institutions (International Maritime Organization, International Chamber of Shipping, Seas at Risk, Innovation and Networks Executive Agency) . Dr Martin Kröger moderated the subsequent dynamic discussion.

The afternoon session was dedicated to actions necessary to promote sustainable environment protection worldwide. International speakers reported on the importance of environment protection as a public task of developing countries and in political cooperation with these. The role of environment protection in the training of management and seafarers was examined just as were ship emission controls in China and in the US. The presentations were followed by a lively panel discussion, led by Dr Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs.
